Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Adult Day Care

Position Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly, Full-Time or Part-Time

Reports To: Program and Services Manager

Position Summary:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) – Adult Day Care provides hands-on support to individuals in a non-residential, community-based adult day care setting. DSPs promote independence, social engagement, and personal growth by assisting with daily activities, personal care, and group activities in alignment with individual service plans (ISPs). This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards, including maintaining accurate documentation for Medicaid and NPI-related services.

Key Responsibilities:

Support Services in Adult Day Care:

  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as toileting, eating, and personal hygiene, while encouraging independence.
  • Facilitate and engage individuals in recreational, educational, and therapeutic activities as outlined in their ISPs.
  • Provide supervision and support to ensure individuals’ safety and well-being during activities, meals, and transitions.
  • Encourage social interactions and participation in group activities to promote community integration and engagement.

Person-Centered Care:

  • Implement and follow ISPs tailored to each individual’s strengths, needs, and preferences.
  • Monitor individuals’ health and behavior, documenting any changes and reporting concerns to supervisors promptly.
  • Foster an environment of respect, dignity, and inclusivity for all participants.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Document services provided, including activity participation, progress toward ISP goals, and any incidents or concerns, in compliance with Medicaid waiver and NPI billing standards.
  • Ensure all records and reports are accurate, thorough, and submitted in a timely manner for audits and reviews.
  • Follow confidentiality guidelines and comply with abuse prevention and reporting requirements, including major unusual incidents (MUIs).

Transportation Support:

  • Assist individuals with boarding and exiting transportation to and from the adult day care center, ensuring safety and comfort.
  • Provide support for mobility devices or physical assistance as needed.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work collaboratively with other staff, activity coordinators, and supervisors to plan and implement engaging activities.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary care conferences and team meetings to review ISPs and make necessary updates.
  • Maintain open communication with caregivers and case managers to provide updates on participants’ progress and concerns.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience working in an adult day care, healthcare, or community-based setting is preferred.

Certifications and Training:

  • NPI Registration: Obtain and maintain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) for documentation and Medicaid compliance purposes.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification: Must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Medication Administration Certification: Required if administering medications.
  • Background Check: Must pass BCII and FBI background checks per Chapter 173-9 of the Administrative Code.
  • Completion of mandatory training within 30 days of hire, including:
    • Person-centered planning and service delivery.
    • Recognizing and reporting major unusual incidents (MUIs).
    • Universal precautions and infection control.
    • Abuse prevention and reporting.
  • Annual training as required by the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) and Medicaid waiver standards.

  • Physical capability to assist with mobility and perform tasks requiring lifting or physical support.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and assist individuals for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs for assisting individuals or moving activity supplies.
  • Sufficient visual and hearing acuity to monitor participants and respond to their needs.
  • Ability to drive or assist with transportation support, if required.
