Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Position Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly, Full-Time or Part-Time

Reports To: Program and Services Manager

Position Summary:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides hands-on support to individuals with disabilities, promoting independence, dignity, and inclusion. DSPs assist with daily living activities, personal care, and community integration while ensuring safety and adhering to individual service plans (ISPs). This role requires compassion, patience, and a commitment to providing high-quality, person-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Support Services:

  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and meal preparation.
  • Support individuals in maintaining a clean and safe living environment.
  • Encourage and assist with community integration, such as attending activities, events, or appointments.
  • Administer medications or perform health-related activities as permitted by agency policy and training certifications.

Person-Centered Care:

  • Implement and follow individual service plans (ISPs) tailored to each client’s goals, needs, and preferences.
  • Promote independence by encouraging individuals to engage in activities and make choices.
  • Communicate with individuals respectfully and compassionately, recognizing their unique needs and preferences.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of individuals at all times, including during transportation and activities.
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies, notifying appropriate personnel as needed.
  • Document services provided, progress toward goals, and any incidents accurately and timely, in compliance with agency and regulatory standards.
  • Adhere to all state and agency policies, including confidentiality, abuse prevention, and reporting major unusual incidents (MUIs).

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work collaboratively with team members, supervisors, and other stakeholders to support individuals effectively.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and care plan reviews.
  • Communicate any changes in individuals’ needs or conditions to supervisors promptly.

Transportation Support:

  • Assist individuals with transportation to and from activities, appointments, or events, ensuring their safety during transit.
  • Follow all safety protocols for transporting individuals, including operating vehicle lifts or assisting with mobility devices.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred but not required.

Certifications and Training:

  • CPR and First Aid Certification: Must be completed within 30 days of hire.
  • Medication Administration Certification: Required if administering medications.
  • Background Check: Must pass BCII and FBI background checks per Chapter 173-9 of the Administrative Code.
  • Completion of mandatory training within 30 days of hire, including:
    • Person-centered planning and service delivery.
    • Recognizing and reporting major unusual incidents (MUIs).
    • Universal precautions and infection control.
  • Ongoing annual training as required by the agency and state regulations.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Compassionate and patient, with a strong desire to help others.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions accurately.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to respond to emergencies calmly and effectively.
  • Physical capability to assist individuals with mobility needs, including lifting and transferring.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs for assisting individuals with mobility or transferring.
  • Sufficient visual and hearing acuity to monitor individuals and respond to their needs.
  • Ability to drive (if required) and transport individuals safely.
